During the Kan’ei Gyoko (Imperial Visit to Nijo Castle in 1626) four hundred years ago, Nijo Castle underwent extensive expansion and renovation over a period of two and a half years in preparation for the event. Roads were improved, and artisans of the time brought together the full range of their skills to ensure the success of the Imperial Visit—creating formal ceremonial attire and conveyances for the procession, as well as items related to gifts and food.
Today, a new initiative has begun to recreate these garments and decorative objects, based on historical records from the period. By learning from the techniques of four centuries ago, we hope to reflect together on what we can leave behind for the next four hundred years, and to expand the circle of collaboration through these efforts.
