The Kan'ei Gyoko (Imperial Visit to Nijo Castle in 1626) was a five-day event
that began on September 6, 1626 (Kan'ei 3), during which the Tokugawa shogun welcomed and hosted the Emperor at Nijo Castle.
It took place just eleven years after the Summer Siege of Osaka,
which brought the Toyotomi clan to an end.
The event proclaimed to the nation the reconciliation between the Emperor and the shogun,
heralding the arrival of a new era of peace.
Four hundred years later, in 2026, the Kan'ei Gyoko 400th Anniversary Festival
is a new initiative that brings this historic event back to life as a living experience.
Throughout the year, the festival offers a wide range of events where visitors can learn about and experience Kan'ei culture,
including the tea ceremony and Noh theatre. On December 6,
the highlight of the festival will be the recreation of the Gyoko Procession (Imperial Procession)
from the Kyoto Imperial Palace to Nijo Castle.
The event will proceed in light rain but will be canceled in the event of severe weather.
A final decision will be made early on the morning of the event.
The Kan'ei Gyoko (Imperial Visit to Nijo Castle in 1626) originally involved some 9,000 participants,
including daimyo from across Japan.
To recreate part of this magnificent procession,
we are inviting participants to join the Gyoko Procession Reenactment Event
dressed in period costumes and traditional kimono.
We also welcome visitors who wish to experience the event as spectators.
Explore a wide range of programs, including lectures and museum exhibitions,
that offer deeper insight into Kan'ei culture.
