On March 15, 2026, the Kan’ei Culture Lecture, “The Attire of the Imperial Capital: Tofukumon-in and Her Magnificent Kimono,” was held by the Kan’ei Gyoko 400th Anniversary Festival Executive Committee, in collaboration with Living History KYOTO.
The speaker was Professor Shigeki Kawakami of the Faculty of International Studies, Osaka Gakuin University. He discussed the kosode (a short-sleeved garment that developed into the modern kimono) introduced to the Imperial Court by Tokugawa Masako, later known as Tofukumon-in, who entered the court of Emperor Go-Mizunoo at the age of fourteen. Professor Kawakami traced the changing designs of these garments over time.
Drawing on historical records from Kariganeya, he provided vivid details of the number and types of kimono Masako ordered. These specific accounts offered a compelling glimpse into the splendor of court life at the time.
Professor Kawakami also shared fascinating stories from his own experience of reconstructing one of Masako’s kosode. His insights were particularly valuable to the Executive Committee as it works to recreate the historic procession. We extend our sincere thanks to Professor Kawakami for this illuminating lecture.
