To ensure the permanent preservation of its invaluable wall paintings, Nijo Castle, formerly an Imperial villa, has been producing faithful reproductions of the wall paintings in the Ninomaru Palace (designated an Important Cultural Property in 1982) since 1972. Today, nearly all of the wall paintings in the Shikidai, Ohiroma, Kuroshoin, and Shiroshoin have been replaced with these reproductions, while the original paintings are being transferred in stages to the Nijo Castle Wall Paintings Gallery, where they are carefully preserved and exhibited.
This year, wall paintings from rooms associated with the Kan’ei Gyoko are being presented in four seasonal exhibitions—spring, summer, autumn, and winter. The spring exhibition featuring the Shikidai will remain on view through May 31. We warmly invite you to take this opportunity to experience these remarkable works.
