The Tokugawa Shogunate established a system to support the Imperial Court’s gagaku ceremonies, in which the Tennoji Gakuso (Tennoji court-music guild) also played a role. Such patronage of gagaku by the warrior class helped pave the way for the tradition to spread into samurai society.
This event focuses on two occasions that symbolize this historical development: the Kan’ei Gyoko (Imperial Visit by the Emperor) and the 1815 Bugaku Performance before the Shogun at Edo Castle. The Kan’ei Gyoko, in particular, was a major event held when Emperor Go-Mizunoo visited Nijo Castle, and is also significant for understanding the relationship between Tennoji Bugaku and the Tokugawa Shogunate.
This is a valuable opportunity to trace how Tennoji Bugaku became connected with samurai society and how it influenced the history of gagaku.
