Beginning today, Thursday, September 10, the Nijo Castle Painting Gallery at the World Heritage Site Nijo Castle will present its Autumn Exhibition of Original Wall Paintings:
“Wall Paintings That Adorned the Shogun’s Audience Chamber: Rooms One and Two of the Ohiroma”!
In 1626 (Kan’ei 3), the Ninomaru Palace underwent extensive renovations in preparation for welcoming Emperor Go-Mizunoo to Nijo Castle.
This exhibition presents the original wall paintings that adorned Rooms One and Two of the Ohiroma, the principal audience hall of the Ninomaru Palace and one of the settings for the Kan’ei Gyoko.
It is a rare opportunity to view these precious wall paintings, designated as Important Cultural Properties, at close range.

A special display, “Protecting and Passing On the Wall Paintings,” will also be presented.
