Based on historical records documenting that Emperor Go-Mizunoo and the Tokugawa Shogun sat together to watch Noh performances at Nijo Castle, the stage of the Kan’ei Gyoko, the Kan’ei Gyoko 400th Anniversary Festival Executive Committee will present the Kan’ei Gyoko 400th Anniversary Commemorative Noh Performance on September 6, 2026, exactly 400 years after the historic Imperial Visit.
This performance offers an exceptionally rare opportunity in the history of Noh. Tatsunori Kongo, the young head-designate of the Kongo School, and Kiuemon Hayashi XIV, head of the Hayashi family, one of Kyoto’s five Kanze families, will share the stage as the principal performers, representing the two schools of Noh most closely associated with the Kan’ei Gyoko.
