Beginning today, Saturday, September 5, the Sen-Oku Hakukokan Museum (Shishigatani, Higashiyama, Kyoto) presents the special exhibition commemorating the 400th anniversary of the Kan’ei Gyoko, “The Kan’ei Gyoko and the Cultural Figures of the ‘City of Flowers’.”
Four hundred years ago, in September 1626 (Kan’ei 3), Emperor Go-Mizunoo made an Imperial Visit to Nijo Castle, and the capital of Kyoto was filled with excitement as a magnificent procession passed through its streets.
Centered on the “Nijo Castle Imperial Visit Folding Screens” (Kyoto City-designated Cultural Property), familiar as the key visual of the Kan’ei Gyoko 400th Anniversary Festival, the exhibition presents the story of this historic Imperial Visit. It also traces the cultural exchanges among Tofukumon-in (Tokugawa Masako), Emperor Go-Mizunoo, Sen Sotan, Kobori Enshu, Nonomura Ninsei, and other leading cultural figures of the era, exploring the Kan’ei Culture that flourished through these connections.
Across four centuries, journey back to the vibrant Kyoto of the Kan’ei era.
