Beginning today, September 29, Sennyuji Temple is presenting an exhibition focusing on its close ties with the Imperial Court and the Tokugawa Shogunate during the early Edo period.
Sennyuji Temple has a long history as a bodaisho (family temple and burial place) for emperors and members of the Imperial family. Emperor Go-Mizunoo, a central figure in the Kan’ei Gyoko, also maintained close ties with the temple. He supported Sennyuji by bestowing temple buildings and treasured objects, and invited monks from the temple to confer Buddhist precepts upon him. Through Tofukumon-in (Tokugawa Masako), his Empress Consort, and their daughter, Empress Meisho, the temple also developed closer ties with the Tokugawa shogunal family and came to receive generous patronage from the warrior class.
Through treasured objects and personal belongings associated with Emperor Go-Mizunoo, Tofukumon-in, and others, the exhibition presents Sennyuji Temple in the early Edo period, when it was supported by both the Imperial Court and the warrior class.
We invite you to take this opportunity to visit Sennyuji Temple and discover its deep connections with the Imperial family.
