This year marks two significant anniversaries: the 1,150th anniversary of the founding of Daikakuji Temple and the 400th anniversary of the Kan’ei Gyoko.
Visitors will have the opportunity to discover precious temple treasures preserved and passed down through generations at Daikakuji, as well as the rich cultural heritage associated with Emperor Go-Mizunoo and the Tokugawa family.
◆ Autumn Exhibition of Temple Treasures: “From Jogan to Kan’ei”
Temple Treasures Preserved Since the Imperial Grant of the Temple’s Official Name
To commemorate the 1,150th anniversary of Daikakuji Temple’s founding, this exhibition will present a restored reproduction of the Shinkan Chokufu Hannya Shingyo (Heart Sutra Handwritten and Sealed by Emperor Saga), the Important Cultural Property Statues of the Five Great Wisdom Kings, and Pine Trees and Cranes, a painting bestowed by Emperor Go-Mizunoo.
Another highlight is the Portrait of Sugawara no Michizane, painted by Imperial Prince Sonsho, who served as the temple’s monzeki (an imperial or aristocratic Buddhist abbot) during the Kan’ei era.

◆ Special Viewing of the Interior of Shinden Hall
The Botan-no-Ma (Peony Room) within Shinden Hall, which is normally closed to visitors, will be specially opened to the public!
Shinden Hall was originally used as the residence of Tofukumon-in (Tokugawa Masako), the Chugu (Empress Consort) of Emperor Go-Mizunoo. It was later bestowed upon Daikakuji Temple by the Emperor.
Visitors will have the rare opportunity to admire the Peony Paintings, a series of fusuma (sliding-door) paintings by Kano Sanraku, at close range. Other highlights include decorative fittings on the sliding-door handles bearing the Imperial chrysanthemum crest and the Tokugawa family’s triple hollyhock crest, reflecting the close ties between the Imperial Court and the Tokugawa family.
Furthermore, to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the Kan’ei Gyoko, no additional admission fee is required for this special viewing. Visitors can enjoy the exhibition with the regular admission fee for the temple hall area.
